Background

Taiwan's most ambitious project in a generation

The Danjiang Bridge spans the Tamsui River estuary with a 450-meter main span, making it the world's longest-span single-tower asymmetric cable-stayed bridge. For decades, the aging Guandu Bridge upstream carried the region’s growing demands, creating increasing pressure on a critical transportation route.

Built to help relieve that pressure, the Danjiang Bridge shortens cross-river travel by approximately 15 kilometers and reduces travel time by an estimated 25 minutes. It serves six simultaneous transport modes on an expressway-classified corridor, from pedestrians and cyclists to private vehicles and buses, making it a critical artery for New Taipei City and the wider region.

To support safe, continuous operations at this scale, Taiwan’s first dedicated bridge control center was established to oversee the corridor around the clock. That required a surveillance system capable of delivering reliable, comprehensive visibility across the full span of the bridge.

Challenge

Not a standard surveillance procedure

The customer needed a system that could serve as the foundation for a broader smart infrastructure deployment, while also supporting AI-powered traffic analytics and public safety communications at every level of the bridge's operations.

Reliable in any condition

The exposed location demanded reliable performance in extreme weather and low-light conditions without sacrificing image quality.

End-to-end coverage without blind spots

Coverage needed to stretch beyond the range of conventional fixed cameras, leaving no gaps across the full length of the bridge.

Every road user, at once

With pedestrians, cyclists, scooters, motorcycles, cars, and buses all commuting across the bridge, the control center needed to track incidents, enforce traffic regulations, and monitor pedestrian safety simultaneously across the entire bridge.

Solution — Why VIVOTEK

Wide-area, all-weather coverage with fewer cameras

VIVOTEK partnered with system integrator Orange Power International to deploy 40 cameras across the bridge, all managed through a Genetec video management system.

Complemented by VIVOTEK's bullet and LPR cameras, the combined architecture delivers flexible, wide-area, all-weather monitoring — making it ideally suited to one of Taiwan's most challenging outdoor environments.

The decision went beyond specifications. For a project of national significance, trust and credibility matter as much as technology.

VIVOTEK's 25-year presence in Taiwan brought both — proven hardware backed by a partner with deep local roots. Its comprehensive AI ecosystem meant the bridge authority was not simply buying a surveillance system, but investing in a platform designed to grow with the bridge's expanding needs.

AI Capabilities

Turning coverage into usable traffic data

Beyond continuous visibility, the deployment gives the control center an analytics layer that works both live and after the fact.

VIVOTEK Rule Management — lane zone definitions
Rule Management — defining car, motorcycle and shared-path zones with directional counting.
Vehicle and pedestrian flow analysis with real-time alerts

The control center sets its own flow thresholds for any location on the bridge. When vehicle or pedestrian volume crosses a certain threshold, the system notifies operators as conditions develop.

Real-time and retrospective analysis

Analysis areas and rules can be configured in advance for continuous monitoring of specific locations or defined afterwards against recorded footage from a selected road section and time period.

Vehicle classification and pedestrian counting

The system identifies and counts cars, trucks, buses, motorcycles, and bicycles as distinct categories, and counts pedestrians alongside them, distinguishing riders from people walking on the sidewalk.

Traffic management applications, LPR and data export

Flow analysis across time periods informs signal-timing decisions; the system supports license plate recognition, and all back-end data exports to CSV for consolidation and reporting.

Business Impact

Uninterrupted visibility, at any hour

The bridge's dedicated control center now has what its operators need most: uninterrupted visibility across the entire active corridor, in any conditions, at any hour. These AI capabilities provide authorities with timely, reliable visual and analytical evidence to support traffic management, lane-use compliance, and the review of potential violations.

Fewer units

Comparable coverage with fixed cameras would have required significantly more units, making the PTZ solution a more practical and operationally efficient choice for a project of this scale.

Beyond its immediate function, the deployment lays the foundation for a broader smart-infrastructure vision. With further expansion planned as needs evolve, it positions the Danjiang Bridge as a model for how intelligent video supports safer, smarter public infrastructure.

Key Benefits

What the deployment delivers

AI traffic intelligence

Enables traffic flow analysis, threshold-based alerts, vehicle classification, pedestrian counting, license plate recognition, and retrospective analysis of recorded footage, with all data exportable for reporting.

Immediate operational readiness

Provides continuous surveillance capability ahead of the bridge’s public opening, helping ensure monitoring is in place from day one.

Comprehensive corridor coverage

Delivers 24/7 visibility across the active corridor, supporting reliable monitoring day and night, in the bridge’s exposed marine environment.

Efficient deployment at scale

Uses PTZ cameras to achieve broad coverage with significantly fewer units than an equivalent fixed-camera deployment, reducing infrastructure requirements while maintaining effective surveillance.

Strong public infrastructure value

Meets the project’s demanding technical requirements while delivering a competitive balance of cost, coverage, and performance.

Future-ready scalability

Establishes a platform for future expansion, including additional bullet cameras for AI-powered traffic analytics and IP speakers for public safety communications as operational needs evolve.

“

As one of Taiwan’s most iconic new cross-river infrastructure projects in recent years, the Danjiang Bridge required a partner we could trust for the long term.

That is why we chose VIVOTEK. Its solution fully meets the core demands of a project of this scale, delivering comprehensive, multi-angle coverage across the entire bridge from day one, while providing a robust intelligent platform that can continue to expand alongside the bridge’s smart infrastructure vision.

”

Ultimately, however, a bridge of this scale is measured in the journeys it carries: a commuter crossing on a wet night, a family walking the pedestrian deck at the weekend, a bus driver making the same run for the twentieth time that day. The VIVOTEK system watches over every one of them, giving the control center the visibility and intelligence it needs to keep Taiwan's newest public space safe around the clock.
