Safety risks can happen in seconds. The right response should not be far behind.

From manufacturing floors to healthcare facilities, personnel may work alone, enter high-risk areas, or spend time in locations where immediate assistance is not always available. To help organizations stay ahead of these risks, VIVOTEK AI cameras now support two new SafeGuard features on compatible models: personal protective equipment (PPE) detection and fall detection, turning safety requirements into proactive protection.

PPE Detection: Safety from the Start

Safety starts before work begins, especially in industrial settings. PPE detection identifies whether personnel are wearing protective gear such as helmets and/or high-visibility vests when entering specific zones.

As workplace safety regulations continue to evolve worldwide, including OSHA requirements in the United States, EU requirements under Directive 89/656/EEC, and Australia’s model Work Health and Safety (WHS) act, organizations face increasing pressure to ensure that required PPE is worn in designated areas. PPE has become an essential part of operational safety and compliance, with regulations requiring employers to assess hazards, provide the required protective equipment, and ensure its use.

PPE detection is ideal for workplace entrances, restricted areas, and individual workstations. Organizations can also integrate speakers with the application to alert personnel on site when missing PPE is detected. By identifying non-compliance at the start, organizations can reduce reliance on manual inspections while helping establish safer working environments. It can also help organizations avoid non-compliance penalties.

Fall Detection: When Every Second Matters

A fall can happen anywhere, especially in places where routine patrols may not reach or where no one is nearby to provide assistance. When a fall is detected by the camera, real-time notifications will be sent for immediate response. Fall detection recognizes body-posture patterns indicating that a person is lying or sitting on the ground.

Why detect sitting? In an emergency, a person may be unable to stand or move even if they have not fully fallen. Recognizing this posture helps ensure that someone who may need assistance does not go unnoticed.

Fall detection is particularly valuable in low-traffic areas such as stairwells, storage aisles, plant corners, and corridors, as well as during off-work hours, such as night shifts. It can support lone-worker safety in manufacturing and logistics environments, while also providing an additional layer of protection in hospitals and elder-care facilities where wearable sensors may not reach. This helps ensure that no one experiencing an emergency goes unnoticed.

Ready to Respond with Existing Cameras

With VIVOTEK AI cameras watching 24/7, organizations can identify potential hazards in real time, allowing organizations to respond quickly and help prevent an incident from becoming more serious. Powered directly on the camera, the SafeGuard features support on-premise applications. With license purchase and specialized SafeGuard VCA package installed, these capabilities can be added to compatible VIVOTEK AI cameras using existing infrastructure, eliminating the need to replace cameras. Alarm triggers and notifications can be monitored centrally through VAST Security Station (VSS), streamlining operations while enhancing personal safety.

The features allow organizations to turn physical security systems into smarter surveillance that can proactively strengthen personal safety across critical environments.

Technical Requirements

To enable the PPE detection and fall detection features:

  • VCA License: A paid VCA add-on license is required for each PPE detection and fall detection function. Only one function can be enabled on each camera at a time.
  • Camera Firmware: Version 1.2502 or later, with the specialized SafeGuard VCA package installed.
  • For a list of compatible camera models, please visit the VCA Analytic Chart.
  • VSS Compatibility: Version 1.6.0.2020 or later
  • NVR: Firmware version 5.2 or later
